Calgary's second sandstone school was

designed in 1902 by William Dodd, the same architect responsible for Calgary City Hall. The building replaced the East Ward School.

The School was opened in 1903 as the New East Ward School.

In 1907 it was doubled in size to tight rooms and named for Alexandra, Queen Consort of King Edward VII.

In 1910, William (Bible Bill) Aberhart became principal of the Alexandra School. He bacame widely known as an evangelist and created the Social Credit Party in 1935. Aberhart was premier of Alberta from 1935 to 1943.

From 1913-1914, the top floor of the school housed a branch high school composed of three classes from Central High School.

The architecturally unsympathetic concrete block gymnasium was built onto the front entrance in 1952.

After the school's closure in 1963, it was transferred to the City of Calgary and boarded up. The gymnasium continuted to be rented to various groups for bingo and music events.

In 1973 Inglewood and Ramsay were designated a Neighbourhood Improvement Program (N.I.P) area.

The restoration of the old Alexandra School building was the primary NIP project with an expressed intent to house community services and programs.

Inglewood and Ramsay residents in partnership with the late Jack Long, a local architecht, fought to save to building despite the fact that it was condemned by the City Administration of the day.

The Alexandra School celebrated its centennial in 2002.
